Emergency Services Volunteer Opportunities
National Disaster Relief: Be a member of the American Red Cross National Disaster Response Organization: Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR). Volunteers will go out on 2 or 3 week assignments to larger disasters throughout the United States. Training (4 core courses) and an application process is required.
Local Disaster Relief: Provide Red Cross services directly or indirectly to disaster victims through support of the Local Disaster unit. Perform duties related to the effective functioning of the Local Disaster unit on disaster operations in Tompkins County.
Disaster Health Services: Provide physical and mental health assistance to victims of local and national disasters. Mental health professionals, social workers, EMTs and nurses are needed to volunteer for this vital function.
Service to Armed Forces (SAF): Provide emergency communication between civilian family members and military personnel around the world. Respond to emergency calls from military personnel and civilian family members.
Project SHARE Caseworker: Work with clients with energy needs relating to electrical shut-offs, no fuel, repair of equipment, or weatherization. Meet with clients to prepare applications, review applications, determine need, and provide referrals if necessary.
Presenter on Community Disaster Education and/or Red Cross International Services: Educate Tompkins County on local and national disasters through presentations and classes. Disseminate information on the variety of International Services the Red Cross movement can provide through a local chapter.
Language Bank: Volunteers are needed to provide written and oral translations for disaster victims. Volunteer would assist a local Disaster Action Team (DAT) member in providing emergency assistance to those who do not speak English, as well as translating American Red Cross written materials for client use. This position is in conjunction with Cornell University, Public Service Center.
