Joe Nesby was a longtime volunteer with the Tompkins County Chapter in Emergency Services. Joe was a true humanitarian whose commitment to the Red Cross and whose contributions to our community will not be forgotten.
Each year we celebrate the spirit of Joe Nesby by honoring a professional rescuer who has displayed exceptional service. This year, the award goes to Deanna Bowles of the Danby Volunteer Fire Company. Deanna has been a volunteer firefighter with the Danby Company for 16 years, as well as an EMT, Director of EMS, and leader and guide to her fellow Company members in Danby. The courageous work of individuals in the emergency services field like Deanna make Red Cross relief efforts possible.

The David Malcom Award was established ten years ago as a way of honoring the memory of David Malcom, who was tragically murdered while on duty at the Red Cross homeless shelter in 1987 at the age of 26.David dedicated his life to humanitarianism. In addition to working at the Red Cross Homeless Shelter, he also worked as a counselor with the mentally ill, and assisted with the adolescent Outreach Drop-in Program of Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service. He was an outstanding individual who made tremendous contributions in our local community.
The life of David Malcom is celebrated annually by honoring those who have made significant differences in the lives of homeless or disadvantaged individuals or families. This year, the award goes to Officer Michael Koval of the City of Ithaca Police Department. Officer Koval strives to build strong working relationships between the Police Department and Red Cross Homeless Services by showing respect and his genuine personal concern to the clients of both agencies. Koval's dedication to people in crisis has been unwavering, even when faced with risky and potentially dangerous situations.
